SPRAT

A training in rope access techniques – carried out in 3 levels and compliant with SPRAT system

SPRAT, The Society of Professional Rope Access Technicians, was established in the 1990’s in the United States of America to address the needs of a growing number of companies employing rope access techniques without a proper knowledge of safety procedures which oftentimes resulted in deadly accidents among workers. SPRAT not only raised the awareness of the safety and effectiveness of rope access systems, but also paved the way to initiate a number of work-at-height safety laws in the USA.

The main objectives of SPRAT are:

  • to improve safety in all industry sectors using rope access techniques
  • to bring forth a set of norms and standard procedures, as well as requirements and directives in terms of industrial rope access trainings
  • to outline a reliable assessment and registration system of technicians

Our company has introduced the SPRAT system in Poland.

Trainings:

All SPRAT trainings are carried out on 3 levels depending on one’s documented experience.

No experience is required from candidates who wish to obtain a level 1 certification.

  • Level 1: worker (performs rope access operations under a strict supervision of a level 2 or 3 technician)
  • Level 2: lead technician(responsible for a safe course of rope access operations; fulfills all level 2 technician requirements; participates in rescue operations)
  • Level 3: supervisor (responsible for the overall course of all rope access operations and all subordinate technicians; possesses a complex knowledge in terms of advanced rescue techniques)

A successful completion of every of the above defined SPRAT levels results in obtaining a certificate and a logbook that is intended for entries in regards to technician’s professional development and all additional attestations and certifications.

Trainings

The duration of all trainings of all levels can be chosen from the following:

  • 3 days long (2 day training + 1 day evaluation)
  • 5 days long (4 day training + 1 day evaluation

Every training program is comprised of a theoretical part, a practical part and a final evaluation. The objective of the theoretical part is to familiarize the technicians with the hardware and general knowledge about various rope access methods, as well as with rigorous regulations in force. The practical training is considered the core part of the program. Our students learn herein various rope access techniques. The entire final day of the program is designated for an evaluation conducted by an independent SPRAT accredited examiner in a written and practical exam format.

ATTENTION!

SPRAT final evaluations for all levels can be – under certain circumstances - delivered in an extramural fashion and without full completion of the training.

Certifications

All SPRAT certificates are valid for a time period of 3 years. After their certification has expired, all technicians are advised to revalidate them by participating in a refresher training corresponding to their level, as well as to undergo an independent assessment performed by a SPRAT accredited evaluator.

Requirements:

  • The minimum age of candidates is 18.
  • The candidates should be physically fit and free from any disability or medical condition that may prevent them from working safely.
  • The candidates should ensure they have an adequate level of physical and mental fitness. They should also be able to withstand severe weather conditions such as heat, cold or wind.
  • The candidates should be reliable, conscientious and responsible.
  • The candidates have none of the following medical conditions:

    • heart problems/ chest pains

    • epilepsy/ swooning
    • fear of heights
    • unstable equilibrium
    • limb immobility
    • alcohol and drug addictions
    • mental problems
    • diabetes

Additional level-dependent requirements

Level 1 is intended for students with 0 to 500 hours of dual rope access experience. It is for most people who have no prior SPRAT or equivalent certification, but who must meet the above mentioned requirements.

Level 2 is intended for certified level 1 technicians with:

  • min. 500 hours and min. 6 months of dual rope experience as a level 1 technician logged since obtaining their SPRAT level 1 certification.

A successful candidate for Level 3 must fulfill the following criteria:

  • must have a min. 500 hours documented industrial rope access experience as a level 2 technician. The logbook should contain a varied range of work projects performed, working situations and techniques.
  • must have a current first aid certification (Our training center offers first aid courses that are compliant with the international EFR system).

Direct Entry

Direct Entry (DE) refers to a rope access candidate bypassing level 1 certification in order to DIRECTLY become a certified level 2 or 3 technician.

The duration of our DE level 1 and 2 trainings can be as follows:

  • 3 days long (2 day training + 1 day evaluation)
  • 5 days long (4 day training + 1day evaluation)
  • 6 days long (5 day training + 1 day evaluation)

ATTENTION!
Evaluations for SPRAT level 2 and 3 can be delivered in an extramural manner and without full completion of the training, if a candidate can prove a varied experience in rope access operations.

All qualified individuals with varied industrial rope access experience are invited to apply for DE. These are the requirements:

  • for level 2 candidates: demonstrates min. 500 logged working hours using rope access; 6 months of actual experience; and references

  • for level 3 candidates: demonstrates min. 1000 logged working hours using rope access; one year of actual experience; has a current first aid certification (Our training center offers first aid courses that are compliant with the international EFR system).

Duties and qualifications of level 3 professionals:

  • to admit all level 1 and 2 professionals: to verify the validity of their medical check-ups; to verify the validity of their rope access and construction site trainings; to verify entries in the logbooks
  • to create a health and safety protection plan: work projects, risk assessment, rescue procedures, equipment inspection
  • to conduct direct supervision of work operations
  • to secure rescue equipment
  • to carry out site trainings
  • to set up and to inspect all rope and fall protection systems
  • to verify and allow use of personal protection hardware
  • to verify all performed duties in the logbooks
  • to conduct – when needed - a rescue operation

A level 2 certification validates one’s high qualifications in terms of rope access techniques. A level 2 professional can assist a level 3 professional, and is allowed - unsupervised – to set up ropes and working sites, to participate in rescue operations and to help with other matters that level 3 professionals are responsible for.
